In the last year, the phenomenon of jellyfish-shaped UFOs has captured public attention, particularly following Jeremy Corbell's release of controversial military footage in January 2024. However, according to MUFON’s Director of International Investigations, Bob Spearing, these mysterious objects have a much longer and more complex history than many realize.

Spearing, who oversees approximately 100 field investigators and handles 200–300 international cases annually, brings a wealth of experience to the investigation of these phenomena. With his background in forensics, journalism, and film, he approaches each case with methodical scrutiny, distinguishing between mundane explanations and truly anomalous events. Through MUFON’s extensive database of over 140,000 cases, patterns have emerged that suggest these jellyfish-like objects represent a distinct category of UFO encounters.

The earliest documented jellyfish UFO case dates back to 1947/1948 in Peru, where witnesses reported a massive object with distinctive red corpuscle-like structures in its “head” region, similar to the interior of a pomegranate. This characteristic would repeatedly appear in later sightings across different continents and decades.

Notable cases include a 2009 sighting over the Hudson River in Wehawken, New Jersey, where witnesses observed an amorphous, glowing object with yellowish tentacles, and a 2006 incident in Croatia where multiple children independently drew similar depictions of a phosphorescent green object hovering over trees.

While some reported jellyfish UFOs can be explained as mundane objects like squid-shaped kites or helium balloons, others defy conventional explanation.

Particularly intriguing are reports of black, tar-like objects that appear to separate and merge in the sky seen in 2021, challenging our understanding of both natural phenomena and human-made aircraft.

The Petrozavodsk phenomenon, which occurred on September 20, 1977, in Russia, was a remarkable mass UFO sighting that left behind compelling physical evidence. According to a TASS (Russian News Agency) report thousands of witnesses reported observing a bright object in the sky that transformed into a massive jellyfish-shaped craft, approximately 300 feet across, featuring golden tentacles displaying various colors. During the encounter, witnesses reported feeling electric currents through their bodies, and many became ill afterward. The object reportedly released a smaller bulb-shaped craft that conducted what appeared to be reconnaissance over local buildings before returning to the main object. The incident left behind physical evidence including coin-sized holes in the ground and window sills, as well as melted and distorted glass windows. Scientific analysis revealed unexplained crystalline structures in non-crystalline glass, a finding confirmed by both Soviet and Western scientists. While Soviet officials conducted extensive investigations and established a research program to study abnormal atmospheric phenomena, no definitive explanation was ever reached. Although some attributed the event to the launch of the Soviet satellite Cosmos 955, this theory was debunked due to the object’s unusual movements and characteristics.

Perhaps most disturbing are the indoor encounters, which present a darker aspect of the phenomenon. Two cases from October 24, 2016 — one in Vancouver, Canada, and another in Iran — describe strikingly similar experiences where luminous jellyfish-like entities allegedly attached themselves to sleeping victims, reportedly attempting to drain their “life force” or soul.

In 1937, Zelma Bramley Moore, a renowned psychic and medium of the 1930s, experienced a startling encounter while in Singapore. During the middle of the night, she awoke to find a peculiar entity floating two to three feet from her face. She described it as being the size and shape of a rugby football standing on end, appearing to be composed of a luminous, gaseous substance that radiated a pale blue light. The entity had a tail-like tentacle, approximately the thickness of a thumb and several feet long, which appeared to be attached to her forehead. Moore reported feeling her vitality being drained through this connection, flowing into the football-shaped visitor. When the entity realized she had awakened, it reportedly reacted with surprise, abruptly detaching itself from her forehead before vanishing completely. This encounter is particularly significant as it bears striking similarities to modern jellyfish UFO encounters reported decades later, particularly those involving indoor encounters and sensations of energy or vitality drainage.

The jellyfish UFO phenomenon raises profound questions about the nature of these entities. Are they organic creatures, as their appearance might suggest? Could they be sophisticated machines disguised as biological entities? Or might they represent something even more exotic — perhaps interdimensional beings or, as some investigators suggest, entities with demonic attributes? The variety of characteristics observed, from the physical to the seemingly supernatural, suggests that these phenomena might not all share a single explanation.

The study of jellyfish UFOs represents just one facet of the broader UFO phenomenon, but it highlights the importance of methodical investigation and pattern recognition in understanding these mysterious encounters. As more cases are documented and analyzed, researchers hope to better understand the nature and origin of these enigmatic objects, whether they prove to be extraterrestrial, interdimensional, or something else entirely.
